Hamerkop Fishing on the Garden Route

Hamerkop Magic on the Garden Route Birdwatching
Notes from BIRDWATCHER on the Garden Route, the quiet heartbeat of the Western Cape. From my stoep I can see lakes, indigenous forest, milkwood thickets, dune fynbos, the Indian Ocean, and the Outeniqua Mountains. In short: birding heaven.

Yesterday I was atlassing for SABAP2, ticking off riverine species along one of the many rivers in the area. At the low water bridge I cut the engine, lifted my bins… and a Hamerkop dropped out of the sky like a brown paper aeroplane. It landed on a dead snag, cocked its hammerhead, then launched its master plan. Five minutes later it was on the concrete slab, dropping down to the little stream, doing the Hamerkop shuffle.

Feet paddling, eyes focussed, it herded tadpoles into a frantic knot. Snap-toss-gulp. Snap-toss-gulp. Each tadpole got the shoebill treatment: airborne, then swallowed whole. I counted 25 in under two minutes. The bird never looked up; it was too busy running its private sushi conveyor belt. I watched for thirty mesmerised minutes. Eventually it registered the human statue on the bridge, gave me the side-eye, and flapped upstream to a taller perch. Day made. Meet the Hamerkop (Scopus umbretta) Size: Guineafowl-big (56 cm).

ID: Chocolate-brown all over, crested hammerhead, long black bill that looks two sizes too big.

Hang-outs: Shallow rivers, farm dams, estuaries, anywhere tadpoles panic.

Social life: Usually solo, but loose flocks turn up in winter.

Architecture: Builds a 1.5 m apartment block of sticks with a mud-plastered side door. Takes 6 weeks, 8 000 sticks, zero building permit.

You can’t mistake it, and you can’t forget it. Your turn Next time you’re driving the Garden Route, slow down at any glinting stream. Roll the window, wait three minutes, and the Hamerkop will probably stage its breakfast show for you. Want guaranteed sightings and zero wrong turns?
