A Near Miss: Juvenile Fish Eagle Hunting

It was a crisp late winter morning, with a biting wind cutting through the bird hide. Despite the chill, the birdlife was surprisingly active. Lesser Swamp and Little Rush Warblers filled the air with their melodic calls, accompanied by the chorus of Levaillant’s Cisticolas, Moorhens, Rails, and Coots.
As I prepared to leave, the tranquility was shattered by the sudden commotion of coots and grebes scattering across the water. A flash of shadow caught my eye, and there it was: a Juvenile Fish Eagle.
I’d often imagined this moment – the powerful bird swooping down to snatch a fish. My heart raced as it plummeted towards the water, legs extended like an airplane’s landing gear. With a thunderous splash, it struck the water. My camera clicked furiously, capturing the moment it looked back, seemingly surprised by its missed target.
The eagle regrouped, changing course to pursue a Black-necked Grebe. Again, I readied my camera, but as it struck, the camera buffered! Frustration surged as I missed the crucial moment. However, I managed to capture the triumphant eagle disappearing into the distance with its prey.
This near-miss encounter was a thrilling reminder of the raw power and beauty of nature. It’s experiences like these that make spending countless hours in a bird hide truly worthwhile.
