Baby Vlei Rat – Garden Route

A few days ago, I found myself at a beloved birdwatching spot along South Africa’s Garden Route. The past week had been plagued by a cold front, so this sunny, wind-still morning felt like a gift. The birds were out in full force – a malachite kingfisher darted back and forth, perching on a reed to await its next meal. A little egret fished right before my eyes, while an African harrier hawk soared overhead, momentarily unsettling the water birds below.
I was focused on capturing photos of a lesser swamp warbler hopping between reeds, when a flicker of movement caught my eye. A tiny vlei rat, clearly nervous but still brave enough to venture from its hiding place amongst the reeds. It basked in the patches of sunlight as it nibbled on green shoots.
I managed a few shots despite the challenge of focusing through the reeds, then decided to switch to video. It was a wise decision. Moments later, the vlei rat’s mother emerged – likely to ensure her offspring didn’t stray too far. The little one turned to its mother, nuzzling her face, touching her with tiny paws, showering her with kisses and sniffs.
