Birding Adventures at Rooiwal near Pretoria

Rooiwal birding: A special birding site near Pretoria.

Ruffs in flight, birding Rooiwal, Pretoria

Living in Pretoria for years has allowed me to become well acquainted with the birding haven that is Rooiwal Water Works. While it may not be for the faint of heart due to the potent smell of the sewage plants, the diverse birdlife found here makes it a rewarding destination for those willing to brave the challenge. Many bird species enjoy this rich water source.  Birders and Bird Photographers haven near Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa.

Before You Go

Permits: Remember to secure a special birding permit from the Tshwane municipality beforehand.

Gear Up: Bring plenty of insect repellent to ward off the swarms of mosquitos that thrive near the water-rich dams. Sturdy footwear and long pants are also recommended, particularly in the summer months when snakes may be active.

Safety First: If exploring areas outside the official water plant, exercise caution and consider hiring a local guide for added safety.

Photographic Opportunities

Rooiwal’s diverse habitats provide fantastic opportunities for bird photography. Early mornings and late afternoons offer particularly favorable lighting conditions. Keep an eye out for a variety of waterbirds, including Ruff, Wood Sandpipers, Common Sandpipers, Yellow-billed Ducks, Knob-billed Ducks, White-faced Whistling Ducks, Maccoa Ducks, Southern Pochards, Red-billed Teals, and Blue-billed Teals.

Important Note: Always be mindful of your surroundings and take necessary precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable birding experience. With a little preparation and awareness, Rooiwal can be a truly rewarding birding destination.
