Cape Grassbird (Yerbera de El Cabo)

Sometimes the best bird of the morning isn’t the one you set out to find, and that’s exactly what happened to me on a recent trip! I was driving slowly toward the Knysna Indigenous Forest one early morning, with my window rolled down as usual. I always do this to listen for bird calls, it’s a habit I’ve picked up over the years because you can often hear birds long before you see them. When I hear a call, I know I can start searching for the bird.
That morning, I heard a bird singing, but I wasn’t sure of its ID at first. The wind and the sound of my car’s engine made it hard to pick out the song clearly. Still, I kept my ears open, and soon I spotted a Cape Grassbird perched close enough for me to grab a quick video right from my vehicle. I was glad I stayed put, most of the time, if you open the door to get closer, the bird will fly off, and I didn’t want to risk spooking it.
I’m excited to share this short video of the Cape Grassbird with all of you! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I’ve got more stories and footage coming soon from a few really amazing birding trips, so stay tuned for those. Let me know if you’ve had any unexpected birding moments like this: I’d love to hear about them!
