Denham’s Bustard on the Garden Route, South Africa.

Few birds make as lasting an impression as the magnificent Denham’s Bustard (Neotis denhami). Standing over a metre tall, this elegant bird is one of Africa’s largest flying species and is instantly recognisable by its bold black-and-white neck, finely patterned upperparts and stately walk.
Although not commonly encountered along the Garden Route, Denham’s Bustards occasionally appear in suitable open farmland and grassland. One reliable area to keep an eye on is the road above Bo-Langvlei towards Bergplaas, where these impressive birds are sometimes seen feeding quietly in the fields or walking along the roadside.
Their calm, deliberate movements make for a memorable sight, but they remain wary of disturbance. Viewing them from the road with binoculars or a camera fitted with a telephoto lens provides an excellent opportunity to appreciate their beauty without causing them to move away.
Early morning and late afternoon offer the best chance of finding these birds, when the soft light brings out the intricate detail of their plumage and they are more actively foraging. Encounters with Denham’s Bustards are always special, reminding visitors that the Garden Route’s diverse landscapes continue to support remarkable wildlife beyond its famous forests and coastline.
