Birding in the Drakensberg this festive season.Woolly-necked Stork and more.
Great time of the year as we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
This is prime birding time in South Africa and unfortunately, I cannot be there to join you this year, but I was fortunate to witness the birth of our grandson, Bismark, on the 27th of November 2024 in Woudenberg, The Netherlands. I will be out of reach until the 20th of January 2025. Birding in The Netherlands in winter is a challenge but an exciting experience. Lots of cycling and walking in the forest and farmland, sometimes a bit wetteras I am used to. Photography is also another ballgame in this weather.
South Africa and especially the Garden Route is alive with birders this season. Fortunately, I could manage to help most of my clients with excellent guides that I partner with.
Early this morning a friend from Inqevu Lodge Cathkin Park area in the Drakensberg sent some pics of a Woolly-necked Stork that is clearly out of range and probably exhausted as it did not care about people getting close to it. The Woolly-necked Stork is definitely a rarity for this area.
Birding in the Drakensberg is exceptional and very rewarding for any birder.
