Birding with GO Magazine
Birding with GO Magazine

On 20 November 2021, I had the privilege to take two ladies (journalists) from the Go Magazine (Weg Tydskrif), on a morning birding trip in the Sedgefield/Wilderness area.
They were on a trip through the Southern Cape, writing an article on the rivers in our area.

The crew arrived at 5h30 shortly after sunrise, just in time to have a glimpse at our pair of breeding African Paradise Flycatchers. About six meters high in a “White Milkwood Tree”, the birds decided to build the perfect cup-shaped nest lined with lichen and spider web.

I have already recorded 30 species before they arrived such as Cape Batis, Helmeted Guineafowl, Fork-tailed Drongo, African Paradise Flycatcher, Black Sparrowhawk, Chorister Robin-chat, Olive Thrush….

A short drive through town, Swartvlei mouth and a gravel road towards “Cloud Nine”, resulted in adding more species such as Water Thick-knee, Great Crested Grebe,  Black Cuckoo, Greater Striped Swallow and many more..
That brought our total to 68 before 10h30.

As we drove along the Hoogekraal road towards Goukamma we lost some time in terms of specie count but travelled through the most amazing area along the Hoogekraal river with the most spectacular views, snaking through the riverine forest, a perfect habitat for the most elusive and sought-after African Finfoot, which we had to dip on for another day. Crossing the low water bridge, which was slightly flooded, some bikers came charging through the water.

A stroll at Goukamma mouth delivered sightings of African Black Oystercatchers, Kelp Gulls and hundreds of terns, cormorants and other waders were some highlights to end the mornings trip.

A well spend day out of office!
