Goliath Heron Nesting Update at Sedgefield’s Island. In January 2024.

I shared a video showcasing the Goliath Heron chick and its parents at their nest on the Island in Sedgefield. The pair successfully raised their chick, and intriguingly, I observed three adult birds at the nest. It’s possible that a helper from the colony or a sibling from a previous brood was assisting with the chick, which was already around 50 days old and quite large.
Unfortunately, later in 2024, the herons attempted to breed again at the same site, but their nest was destroyed by Grey Herons, forcing them to abandon the effort. Fast forward to 18 August 2025, just a week ago, I was thrilled to spot the Goliath Herons back at the Island! This time, they’ve chosen a higher nesting site and are diligently constructing a robust new nest, fiercely defending it from potential threats. With luck, we could see an egg or two in the coming weeks, followed by a new chick hatching three to four weeks later. The adult Goliath Herons remain highly active, frequently foraging in the Swartvlei Lake at Sedgefield. Stay tuned for more updates on their nesting journey!
