Hundreds of Cape Cormorants flaying along the channel
This morning, I headed out early to the Rondevlei connecting channel, and what a treat it was! A vibrant Malachite Kingfisher kicked things off with a dazzling display, flitting along the water’s edge. Then, to my delight, three Squacco Herons landed right in front of me, too close to fit all three in my camera’s viewfinder! The road over the channel was quiet, giving me the perfect chance to snap some photos and record a bit of video. These Squaccos have been frequent visitors to the channel over the past few days, so I wasn’t entirely surprised to see them. That said, the weather was less than ideal, chilly and windy, making for a brisk morning. Later, I noticed posts on the Garden Route Rare Birds group about these three herons. While they’re not true rarities (they’re quite common in this area and have been for years), seeing them together on such a dreary day was a real highlight. The excitement didn’t end there.
A sudden commotion up the channel startled the herons, and they took flight as a massive flock of Cape Cormorant, hundreds strong, surged down the channel from the east. They flew low, skimming just above the water, heading toward Langvlei. As they neared the bridge where I stood, they soared upward, passing right over me. The sound of their wings was unforgettable, a true spectacle! I often spot these cormorants this time of year, moving in large flocks between the lakes, but their low flight and sheer numbers made this moment extraordinary. What a morning to be out with the birds! Keep exploring, and happy birdwatching!
