Malachite Kingfisher – A Front Row Seat at the Hide!
There are mornings in the field that simply take your breath away, and this was one of them.
On a recent guided birding trip in the Wilderness and Sedgefield area of South Africa, we settled into a local bird hide just as the early morning sun began casting its golden light across the water and reeds. What followed was nothing short of magical.
A Malachite Kingfisher, one of Africa’s most jewel-like birds, chose a perch right in front of the hide. We are talking reeds and stumps just metres away. This tiny, brilliantly coloured bird put on a full show, hunting, catching small fish, and preening in the warm morning light, completely at ease with our presence.
The golden reflections on the water created the most incredible atmosphere and backdrop. Every feather, every colour, the electric blue, the rich orange, was lit up perfectly. Moments like these remind you exactly why we get up before sunrise!
The little bird looked up into the sky as a raptor flew high above and after a few moments, when the Little Rush Warbler carries on with its song, it continues preening as if nothing had happened. We watched, barely breathing, for several minutes. Pure magic.
