Unforgettable Birding Adventure in South Africa’s

Outeniqua Mountains, March 2025

Join me on a thrilling birding journey through South Africa’s scenic Outeniqua Mountains! In March 2025, my friends and I embarked on a memorable day trip from Sedgefield, winding through Hoekwil and Touwsranten to Bergplaas Woodville store. There, we collected the key to the old wagon route gate, kindly managed by Louvain, unlocking access to a birder’s paradise.

Under crisp morning skies, we marveled at the vibrant fynbos landscape, proteas, ericas, and rugged peaks painting a stunning backdrop. Our first highlight came swiftly: a rare Fynbos Button Quail erupted from the brush, darting down the valley. Though too quick for cameras, its distinct features left us buzzing with excitement.

Climbing higher, we encountered a captivating family of Orange-breasted Sunbirds. A serene female, with her elegant, muted tones, posed perfectly for a photo. Soon, a juvenile male strutted his vibrant, moulting plumage, followed by the bold adult male, who chased off the youngster in a dramatic display. I captured stunning images of all three, which I’m thrilled to share!
