Osprey overwinter in Sedgefield, Garden Route, South Africa

An early morning hike over a dune near Sedgefield filled my heart with tranquility and joy. The distant calls of Fish Eagles echoing from the hilltop added a thrilling touch to the serene landscape.
This time, I shifted my focus to the smaller wonders of the trail. Butterflies, moths, grasshoppers, and spiders danced in the crisp morning air, each a tiny masterpiece of nature.

High above, a raptor caught my eye, too distant to identify at first. My instincts whispered “Osprey,” though by late April, these birds typically migrate to their northern hemisphere homes.
With limited time, I covered just 2 km, reaching the dune’s crest where my hunch was confirmed: a stunning juvenile Osprey soared overhead. This young bird had chosen to linger in South Africa for the winter, a delightful surprise. Though it flew high, I captured clear ID photos to mark the moment.
On my descent, the Fish Eagle’s call rang out again, joined by the distinctive cry of a Forest Buzzard. The veld was alive with vibrant Ericas and other wildflowers, painting the landscape in breathtaking hues. Small birds like the Karoo Prinia, Bar-throated Apalis, Southern Boubou, and Cape Batis flitted about, their lively presence a charming farewell.
This short outing was a reminder of the incredible birding experiences the Garden Route offers, even after the migrants have departed. Plan your next adventure here and book a birding tour, half-day, full-day, or longer trips to explore the wonders of South Africa’s birdlife!
