Pied Kingfisher: The Multi-Tasking Fishing Master

Even on a cold, windy winter day, a visit to my favorite bird hide always offers a dose of nature’s wonder. This time, the sharp call of a Pied Kingfisher broke the quiet.
Several perches dot the area, some just out of reach for a perfectly crisp shot with my 400mm Canon lens. But these days, I’m more focused on the story than the sharpness of the image. Action and intrigue are the real prize.
Today, the kingfisher revealed a hidden talent. After a successful dive, it didn’t consume its catch. Instead, it soared back up, seemingly to try again. However, upon reviewing my photos, I realized it had caught a fish on the initial dive and was now attempting a double scoop!
A second plunge yielded another fish, and the kingfisher retreated to a distant perch. It was only later, examining the images, that I fully grasped this remarkable feat.
This experience highlighted the importance of taking a closer look. How many unique moments have I inadvertently deleted, not realizing their significance?
Today was a double reward – for me, the thrill of witnessing nature’s resourcefulness, and for the kingfisher, a double catch to savor. It’s a reminder that even in familiar territories, there’s always something new to discover if you look closely enough.
