Rare Plovers Take Center Stage on the Garden Route

Rare Plovers Take Center Stage at Plettenberg Bay: A Birdwatcher’s Dream. In late July 2025, Plettenberg Bay became ahotspot for birdwatchers across South Africa as two rare and remarkable visitors, the Tibetan Sand Plover (Anarhynchus atrifrons, also known as the Lesser Sand Plover or Mongoolse Strandkiewiet) and the Greater Sand Plover (Anarhynchus leschenaultii, Grootstrandkiewiet), graced its shores.

Greater Sand Plover and Tibetan Sand Plovers on the Garden Route, South Africa

These elusive waders, seldom seen in South Africa, sparked excitement among the  birding community, drawing enthusiasts to the scenic Keurbooms River mouth (Garden Route South Africa) for a chance to witness these avian treasures in action. For birdwatchers, spotting these plovers is a rare treat, but distinguishing between the two species can be a challenge, even for seasoned observers.

The Greater Sand Plover, slightly larger at roughly 2 cm longer than its Tibetan cousin, sports a noticeably thicker bill, a key identifying feature. According to Roberts’ Birds of Southern Africa, the Greater Sand Plover also has dull yellowish-grey legs, but this subtle trait is often tricky to spot in the field, especially under the variable light of a coastal setting. Size and bill shape remain the most reliable markers when observing these birds alongside the more common White-fronted Plover (Anarhynchus marginatus), as beautifully captured in side-by-side comparison videos shared by local birders.

The journey to see these plovers was no small feat. Reaching the Keurbooms River mouth required a demanding 6 km (3km one way) trek through soft, shifting sand—a round trip that tested the stamina of even the most dedicated birders. Without a boat, crossing the river mouth, even at low tide, was impossible, making the hike a necessary pilgrimage for those eager to catch a glimpse of these rare visitors. Yet, for those who made the journey, the reward was well worth the effort. The sight of these plovers foraging along the shoreline, their delicate movements contrasting with the rugged beauty of Plettenberg Bay, was a moment to cherish.
