A Quick Stop Rewarded with Three Garden Route Favourites

Sometimes the most memorable birding moments happen when you least expect them.

A quick stop at one of my favourite spots along the Garden Route recently delivered some excellent sightings and photographic opportunities with three wonderful species: the Grey Cuckooshrike, Olive Woodpecker and Southern Boubou. While all three birds are fairly common residents of the Garden Route, it is not often that one gets the chance to photograph them all during the same morning.

The day started under overcast skies as I decided to spend a few minutes at the Goukamma River before continuing with the day’s activities. The river was calm, with barely a breath of wind disturbing its surface. Overhanging branches stretched out above the water, instantly reminding me of the African Finfoot that occasionally makes an appearance here. It is always a species I hope to encounter whenever I visit this beautiful stretch of river.

On this particular morning, however, the river’s quiet residents were enjoying the peaceful conditions. A few Reed Cormorants, Egyptian Geese and African Darters drifted along the water, their reflections mirrored perfectly on the glassy surface. It was a serene scene and worth the stop on its own.

As I prepared to get back into my car, the unmistakable call of a Grey Cuckooshrike caught my attention. Moments later, a group of Speckled Mousebirds arrived and suddenly the trees above me came alive. What had been a quiet morning transformed into a bustling bird party within seconds.

By now, the sun had started to push through the clouds, creating ideal photographic conditions. The soft morning light highlighted the birds beautifully, and the action intensified when a striking Olive Woodpecker joined the gathering. What had started as a casual stop quickly turned into a full photographic session.

Not long afterwards, a Southern Boubou emerged from the vegetation as insects became more active in the warming air. Watching and photographing these species together was a real treat and a reminder of just how rewarding even a brief stop can be when exploring the Garden Route.

Within a few short minutes it was time to move on, but I left feeling extremely satisfied. Encounters like these are exactly why I never leave my camera at home. You never know when an ordinary stop might turn into an extraordinary birding experience.

The Garden Route continues to surprise and delight, proving once again that patience, a little curiosity, and a camera close at hand can lead to unforgettable moments in nature.
